The new success of Google could be making a map of the bottom of the seas oceans. To that end, the company has assembled a group of experts on oceanography which shall serve as advisors to the project, and in December last year invited researchers from
institutions around the world to Googleplex, in California. There were discussed steps to create a 3D map oceanographic.

The new Google tool for now is called "Ocean" (Ocean), although this could change in final form. It will look at other 3D applications of the company, and users can view the underwater topography (bathymetry), to search for points of interest and navigate through the zooming and panning tools.

Being consulted on the project, a spokesman for Google said the company did not yet have "nothing to announce at this time." The researchers claim that oceanographers and a tool that would be incredibly useful. Is that for now, Google Earth provides a useful model of the land beneath the oceans. "There is no real depth in the model of Google Earth," says Tim Haverland, a developer of geospatial applications Fisheries Service of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOA). "You can not ride in a submarine and virtual travel through the water to explore the oceans and submarine canyons." Google Ocean change this.

Using satellite imagery, readings of changes in Earth's magnetic field, and data from many other sources, Google assemble a collage of the seabed. This shall include a base coat that shows the depth of the seabed and space that will serve as a framework to put more data. It is high-resolution images for all areas possible.

When operational, there will be additional layers representing phenomena such as weather patterns, ocean currents, water temperature, location of shipwrecks, coral reefs and algal blooms, thanks to data provided by the National Park Service and Nasa, who also released additional data for Google Earth and Google Sky.

With Google Earth, the company had images of 29% of our planet. Now, going by 71%.
